Frequently Asked Questions
A crochet retwist uses a crochet hook or needle to tighten new growth at the loc root by pulling the existing hair through itself, creating a clean, tight result without any gel. A comb retwist uses a fine-tooth comb and styling gel to twist new growth in the direction of the existing loc. Both methods achieve neat, well-maintained roots — crochet retwists tend to last longer between appointments and involve zero product buildup at the root, while comb retwists can feel softer and work especially well with coarser textures.
Most loc wearers retwist every 4 to 8 weeks depending on hair texture, growth rate, and personal preference. Fine or looser-textured hair may need retightening more frequently; coarser textures typically hold their twist pattern longer. Waiting too long between retwists can cause roots to loosen, locs to unravel, or neighboring locs to grow together at the base.
The three essentials for loc maintenance are: (1) a clarifying shampoo that removes buildup without leaving residue — NappStar's shampoo is formulated specifically for locs, (2) a lightweight retwist gel for keeping roots neat — NappStar's Super Hold Retwist Gel provides strong hold without flaking or drying, and (3) a retwist oil for scalp moisture and sheen — the Glow Up Retwist Oil is lightweight and won't weigh locs down. The NappStar AllStar Kit bundles the gel, oil, and rose water together for a complete home maintenance set.
Human hair loc extensions (like NappStar's Afro Kinky Human Hair) look and feel completely natural, blend seamlessly with your existing locs, can be bleached and colored, and are ideal for loc repairs and lengthening. Synthetic loc extensions are generally less expensive but cannot be heat-styled or bleached, and may not blend as naturally over time. For the most natural result — especially for loc extensions, repairs, or filling in thin sections — human hair is the professional recommendation.
Loc extensions are added by joining a piece of extension hair (pre-rolled or loose) to an existing loc or to a section of natural hair at the root. The extension is interlocked or braidlocked at the base, then palm-rolled or backcombed to blend with the existing texture and length. This process can lengthen short locs, fill in thin or damaged locs, or replace a loc that has been cut. NappStar's in-salon loc extension install service and our loc extension install kits make this process straightforward for both stylists and DIY clients.

A Chair Talk is NappStar's signature consultation process — a brief conversation between the client, the stylist, and a front desk team member that takes place right after shampooing, while the client is seated in the chair. During the Chair Talk, the team discusses services, pricing, any client concerns, and what to expect from the appointment. This practice ensures everyone is aligned before the service begins, eliminates pricing surprises, and gives the client the opportunity to ask questions comfortably.
